Human Systems Architecture · Lesson 3 of 4

The Mortar: The Structural Compound

A Structural Compound is a carefully engineered mixture of human competencies, leadership practices, values and behaviors that become stronger together than they could ever be independently.

Twelve competencies form the mortar: communication, emotional intelligence, leadership, accountability, coaching, conflict resolution, trust, civility, critical thinking, teamwork, resilience and personal responsibility.

Mortar is invisible when it works. You notice it only where it is missing — the gap between two good people who cannot work together.

Why it matters

Most organizational pain is mortar failure, not pillar failure. The strategy is fine; the seams are open.

In practice

  • Two excellent departments miss a deadline because no one owned the handoff — accountability and communication were never mixed in.
  • A team survives a brutal quarter because trust and resilience were built before they were needed.

Your reflection

Which two compound competencies are weakest in your closest working relationship? What is one repair you can make this week?
