Social Cohesion · Lesson 3 of 4

The Foundation and the Result

The foundation of cohesion is practiced, not felt: respect, communication, understanding, empathy, patience, courage and commitment.

The result is measurable: people feel safe and supported, differences are respected, potential is realized, problems are solved together, and everyone can thrive.

Why it matters

Patience and commitment are on the foundation list because cohesion is slow work that fails when people quit early.

In practice

  • A community group that keeps meeting for two years finally changes a policy.
  • A leader listens through three difficult sessions before proposing anything.

Your reflection

Which foundation practice do you personally find hardest? Why that one?
